OPINION: The Melbourne Rich Lister, who died two weeks ago, had the eye of a fashion designer and proved that vanity can co-exist with depth.

Perhaps the most distinctive personality trait of Melbourne property developer Jonathan Hallinan, who died nine days ago aged 47, was an almost painfully honest commitment to self-transparency.

When he became sick, with cancer, Hallinan kept the social media posts coming. He wasn’t too vain to hide his physical deterioration. That may have been because he was as committed to self-improvement as he was to appearances. He promoted properties with the eye of a fashion designer, trained five to six times a week and considered a hamburger a steak between lettuce leaves.told interviewer

Hallinan, Combes and DJ Grant Smillie opened a Melbourne-like coffee shop, Strings of Life, in West Hollywood. For $11 million, they built a Merivale-like bar and restaurant, Grandmaster Recorders, in a famous former LA recording studio located in what is known as the Vinyl District.Hallinan dedicated his life to business. On finding success, he was tormented by the fear of losing it. During the 2007-08 financial crisis, abandoned by creditors, he literally felt like he was at risk of death.

A genetic mutation called Polycythemia Rubra Vera, amplified by stress, caused his bone marrow to produce three times as many red blood cells as the average man. His skin developed a reddish hue, and doctors regularly drained his blood to combat the build up. Eventually, Hallinan was told he wouldn’t be admitted to the trial of a new drug treatment, and there were no other options. He accepted his fate.
