Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is set to join AS Monaco after a tumultuous year that saw him move to Saudi Arabia and subsequently return to Europe. Henderson's new venture will see him reunited with former Liverpool teammate Takumi Minamino.

England international Jordan Henderson is set to join Ligue 1 side AS Monaco after a tumultuous year. Henderson's journey began last year with a move to Dutch giants Ajax following a short and unsuccessful stint at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq. His latest transfer will see him reunite with former Liverpool teammate Takumi Minamino, who spent two seasons at Anfield alongside Henderson.

Monaco have progressed to the play-off phase of the Champions League, where they will face PSG, Brest, or Benfica, with the winner securing a last-16 clash against Liverpool. Henderson's move comes as a surprise considering his controversial departure from Liverpool in 2023 for a lucrative deal in the Middle East. He joined forces with another former Reds captain, Steven Gerrard, at Al Ettifaq but the move quickly soured as he struggled to adapt to life in the Middle East following his £12 million switch. He faced criticism for his decision to move to Saudi Arabia from some fan groups after previously expressing his support for LGBTQ+ causes. During his time in English football, Henderson was a vocal advocate for the Rainbow Laces campaign, aimed at promoting inclusion in sport, and often wore the One Love armband. Henderson issued an apology, stating, 'If anyone was offended or feel as though I upset them, that's on me, that was my decision and I apologise for that. It was never my intention. I just want to look forward now and concentrate on being the best player I can for Ajax. My beliefs have never changed and never will. Again I can only apologise if people feel let down.' Despite hoping his Saudi departure would keep the door open for international football, his return to Europe failed to earn him a spot in the squad for Euro 2024. Henderson, however, hasn't relinquished his dream of representing the Three Lions again and believes that, like Angel Gomes at Lille, Ligue 1 won't hinder his chances of international recognition
