Cloud supercomputers rule our AeroX fastback cap to be a drag-reduction success—but does the wind agree?

aerodynamics might be improved by nearly 15 percent by fitting a fastback bed cap. We contacted Michigan Vehicle Solutions, which was selling a similar product for the previous-gen combustion F-150, and it agreed to make us a prototype.

We share the considerable trust the industry places in the fidelity of A2MAC1’s “digital twin” 3D models. Having watched IPF Racing create the 16.5-million-point 3D model of the cap and noting how perfectly it fits the truck model, this data appears beyond reproach. We asked whether Airshaper results using A2MAC1 models had shown close correlation with wind-tunnel results. We were first reminded that neither CFD simulation nor wind-tunnel testing is perfectly representative of the real world because it’s nearly impossible to find an area of perfectly stagnant air just waiting to flow over, around, and under your vehicle in a laminar fashion. That said, was digitized by A2MAC1, a simulation run in AirShaper, and the same car tested in a wind tunnel in 2020.

Our instantaneous efficiency meter reported 1.8 miles/kWh on the way down, but sunny weather had it showing 2.1 miles/kWh for the return trip. Sadly, as with most such onboard trip meters, those results didn’t agree with actual miles versus energy added. Our computed efficiency was 1.89 miles/kWh southbound and 1.93 mi/kWh heading north, yielding an overall trip average of 1.91.
