Once the UK was a housing trailblazer, says the Grand Designs presenter. Not any more - now we should look to Scotland and Germany for inspiration

After 25 years of presenting Channel 4’s Grand Designs, McCloud knows how to spot an interior fad When it comes to his dream home, Kevin McCloud doesn’t long for much. He wants a hammock. He wants an outdoor shower. And he wants a veranda so that he can listen to the rain while sipping wine. “I’ve wanted them for 40 years. And I’m now just getting around to doing them. It’s arguably a bit late. If I had done this 20 years ago, I might have felt a lot happier about it.

McCloud hopes that our homes will instead be designed around feeling. “I’m actually quite excited about the prospect of building environments for ourselves that look after us and keep us warm and dry, but also start to lift our spirits and our souls and make us happier.”This might look like McCloud’s outdoor shower. “It’s a lovely feeling in the winter,” he says. Or even getting a home that faces the nightly sunset: a way of designing that sparks daily joy, rather than a one-off wow.

McCloud is, rightly, angry about this false promise. “We were leading the race in Europe. Britain’s zero-carbon targets for building eco houses was way ahead of anybody else,” he says. “Then we looked over our shoulders, saw we were winning this race, and thought, let’s just have a quick fag. Oh no. Now we’re last. How did that happen? It happened because of this government.
