May is ALS Awareness Month and for Michael Polito and his family, it marks more than awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating neurogenerative disease. It represents the disease as lightning striking twice in a family.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 5,000 people are diagnosed with ALS each year and while there’s an old saying that lightning never strikes the same place twice, ALS did exactly that for one local family.
At first, Dr. Tony’s goals post-diagnosis were in keeping with his hard-charging personality and extroversion: he wanted to work as long as he could, accomplish a short bucket list including hiking up and down the Grand Canyon while he still could. But none of the Politos figured on having another family member with ALS, until they did. Polito’s sister Kathy Polito Wirtz, herself a mother with 11 children, was just diagnosed with ALS in March.
