A Labour councillor has apologised after using 'unacceptable language' during a planning debate on a new secondary school. Labour councillor, Gareth Staples-Jones, who is deputy cabinet member for strategic growth, was asked by the chair of planning to withdraw a remark he made while discussing plans for a temporary building to house 150 students starting at the Star Academies school in September 2024.

Chairing the meeting, Coun Sean Thorpe, interrupted him saying 'can I ask you to withdraw that comment?'. He added: "We don't accept that type of language in this chamber." Coun Staples-Jones then said sorry, saying 'my apologies, I was a bit emotional'. "The temporary building would accommodate the school's first year group of 150 pupils for a period of two school terms up to the Easter holidays in 2025. It is then planned that the pupils will decant across to the new main school building.
