Councillors in Nottinghamshire, dissatisfied with Labour's direction, are leaving to form a new independent party.
A group of councillors from Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottinghamshire plan to establish a new independent party. They claim the Labour Party has abandoned traditional values and criticize policies such as the winter fuel policy, which they say could see district and borough councils scrapped. Council leader Milan Radulovic, a Labour member for 42 years, is among those leaving the party. He said he was 'deeply saddened' but placed in an 'impossible position'.
Radulovic said he could not support another centrist government intent on destroying local democracy and dictating national policy from a high pedestal. The councillors said they would establish a new independent party, planning to run the borough council as a minority administration in the short term, but may need support from existing independents to keep control. 10 of them were blocked from standing for Labour at upcoming local elections for Nottinghamshire County Council after questioning the winter fuel policy. A local Labour spokesperson said the decision by some councillors to sit as independents 18 months after they were elected was 'incredibly disappointing'
