Burnley MP Oliver Ryan has apologized for offensive and abusive messages he sent in a WhatsApp group that also included Labour figures. This follows the dismissal of Andrew Gwynne from his ministerial position over similar messages sent to the same group.
A second Labour MP has apologised for comments made in a WhatsApp chat, following the dismissal of Andrew Gwynne from his ministerial position over messages he sent to the same group. Burnley MP Oliver Ryan issued a statement acknowledging that his contributions to the group were 'completely unacceptable' and expressing regret for not intervening at the time. In the WhatsApp group, which included other Labour figures, Ryan sent a series of offensive and abusive messages.
A government source revealed to the PA news agency that the party's chief whip would be engaging with Ryan, stating that 'no action is off the table'. 'I did not see every message, but I accept responsibility for not being more proactive in challenging what was said,' Ryan stated. 'I also made some comments myself which I deeply regret and would not make today, and for that, I wholeheartedly apologise.' He pledged his full cooperation with Labour's ongoing investigation, which commenced after Gwynne's messages came to light. Gwynne, who has been suspended from the party, issued an apology on X, formerly known as Twitter, for any offense caused by his 'badly misjudged' remarks. Ryan, 29 years old, confirmed his membership in the WhatsApp group between 2019 and early 2022, during his tenure as a councillor on Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council. He secured his first victory as an MP in July. 'Some of the comments made in that group were completely unacceptable, and I fully condemn them,' Ryan added.
