Tangible, immediate improvements to the lives of workers will mark a clean break with the Tories

Workers’ rights legislation would be early proof that a Labour government can bring about real, positive change

While the discontent is widespread – and of no surprise to anyone who has scanned the faces of fellow passengers on their morning commute – the previous government’s response was far from progressive. Despite, the departed Tory government opted for the stick rather than the carrot. It focused on punitive disability benefits, short-sighted back-to-work schemes and anti-union legislation, rather than improving working conditions.

So the New Deal for Working People was born, Labour’s package of supply-side reforms which represent the most ambitious wellbeing-focused policy in years. It includes raising wages, banning zero-hours contracts, establishing fair pay agreements, protecting workers from harassment and guaranteeing rights like flexible working and parental leave from day one of employment.

Yet, just months into the premiership, rumours of internal divisions within Labour are already threatening to undermine the party’s plans. Commentators have raised concerns about the potential impact on businesses, and there are whispers that Labour may water down the proposals, sparking anger from unions. Reports have also surfaced of a clash between deputy prime minister Angela Rayner and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds over whether worker protections should start from day one.
