A Labour Party official has resigned following accusations of swearing and shouting at a Nottingham city councillor. The official claims he was bullied by the councillor who made the initial complaint, but the councillor denies these allegations and maintains he acted appropriately.
A Labour Party official has resigned from all his roles with the party following accusations of swearing and shouting at a Nottingham city councillor. The official claims he needs to prioritize his 'wellbeing and mental health' and alleges that he was actually bullied by the same Nottingham councillor who made complaints against him. Councillor AJ Matsiko, a Labour councillor for Sherwood, made the claims after a Nottingham Labour group meeting on January 16.
Councillor Matsiko alleged that there was bullying from two members of Labour's local government committee (LGC). The LGC oversees all issues relating to local government and its members can attend meetings of the Nottingham Labour group. During a break, a procedural dispute erupted and one LGC official reportedly told Councillor Matsiko: 'The party is going to f****** get you.' The member allegedly then said he would personally 'f****** get' Councillor Matsiko. After leaving the room, Councillor Matsiko claims another LGC member tried to provoke him by calling him names including 'a little s***'. The first LGC member was eventually excluded from the rest of the meeting, whilst the second one allegedly left whilst calling Nottingham City Council a 's***hole'. The second LGC member has now resigned, saying in an email to the party: 'I wish the leadership and executive nothing but good luck in their continuing work to put Nottingham back on the right track - they are good people doing a tough job and they are starting to turn things around. 'They are being let down by a useless regional party who have completely failed in their duty of care to me and a bloc within Labour Group who want nothing more than to cause chaos to satisfy their own twisted, self-aggrandising ends. Everything in my being is screaming that I should stand up to bullies, but sometimes you just have to walk away and let them self-destruct. This is that time.' Councillor Matsiko has flatly denied that he exhibited any bullying or intimidating behaviour towards the LGC official and Nottinghamshire Live has spoken to multiple witnesses who agree with Councillor Matsiko's version of events. The Sherwood councillor said of the former LGC official: 'He has not, to date, extended any apology for his unreasonable, hostile, and offensive behaviour towards me. 'I wish him well in his future endeavours, and hope that he will utilise this period for reflection on his interactions with others. It is my view that resorting to aggression and unilaterally abandoning his responsibilities, including his position on the LGC, is not conducive to serving the best interests of the city... I can confirm that, despite his hostility, I maintained composure and stood my ground without resorting to insults or offensive language.' A Labour Party spokesperson said: 'The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously. We do not comment on individual complaints and investigations.
