Starmer has suffered the biggest rebellion of his premiership after dozens of Labour MPs defied him
In total, 53 Labour MPs did not back the measures. It’s not clear how party managers will deal with these rebels
However, even as the details are still emerging there appear to be three tiers of rebels who voted against the Government. The first were some of the seven suspended Labour MPs, including former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, who had voted against maintaining the Government’s two-child benefit cap in July.
Then there was a second tier. Jon Trickett, who didn’t rebel in July, became the only Labour MP to vote with the opposition to block the cut to the winter fuel allowance. He said he revolted “to defend his constituents” adding that he would “sleep well tonight”. If the party whips deal with him the same way the July rebels were treated, he faces being suspended from the party, probably for six months.
Ahead of the vote during the debate in the House of Commons one of the most impassioned speeches came from McDonnell, spitting scorn with every syllable.because of “these” he said, referring to the Tories. He said he needed to look his constituents in the face but regretted voting with “these characters”. He meant the Tories he would have to brush shoulders with in the division lobbies.
