Whenever a beloved work of fiction makes the journey from page to the stage or screen, fans of the book invariably find fault with the result. But they won't with the musical adaptation of Jacqueline Kelly's Newbery Award-winning 2009 middle-grade novel 'The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate,' which made its world premiere Saturday at Lamb's Players Theatre in Coronado.
Mike Buckley's scenic design is minimalist, except for the specimen-filled science lab of Calpurnia's wise Grandfather Walter, who introduces her to the poetic origins of her given name, the scientific method and Charles Darwin's 1859 book on evolution, 'On The Origin of Species,' for which the book is named. Seventh-grader Aubriella Navarro makes an impressive Lamb's debut as Calpurnia.
