Heavy rain and strong winds caused widespread power outages and flooding across Lancashire on January 1st. Thousands of homes were affected, with restoration efforts underway.

Hundreds of homes across Lancashire have been left without power on New Year's Day after heavy rain and strong winds brought chaos to the region. Residents in Chorley, Clitheroe, Preston, Rossendale, Hyndburn, West Lancashire and Wyre have awoken to no electricity with power not expected to be restored in many places until around 4pm. Electricity North West said engineers are 'on their way' to affected areas and they aim to get power back on 'as quickly as possible'.

It comes after the county was battered by a deluge of rain over the past 24 hours. More than 20 flood warnings and half a dozen flood alerts remain in place across Lancashire this morning (January 1) while homes and roads have been left under water. An amber weather warning for rain from the Met Office remained in force until 9am today covering central and eastern areas of Lancashire.
