A pub in Bolton seeks to reopen with late-night hours, sparking debate among residents regarding noise and potential disruption to the neighborhood.
An application to revive the Bowling Green pub in Bolton , England, with extended weekend hours has sparked controversy among local residents. The pub, which has been closed for several years and converted into flats, seeks to operate until 1 am on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. While the initial proposal aimed for a 3 am closure, the applicant, SJR Trading Ltd., has agreed to modifications following concerns raised by the council and neighbors.
These changes include reducing closing hours, ceasing all licensable activities by 1 am, and stopping alcohol sales by 12:30 am on those evenings. Additionally, the applicant has pledged to employ a minimum of two SIA-registered security personnel from 8 pm until closing time on Thursday to Saturday nights. The Bowling Green envisions itself as a family-friendly bar and restaurant until 10 pm, transitioning into a bar with hot food snacks later in the evening. The venue also plans to host occasional functions, such as funerals, baptisms, and community events. However, the proposed late-night hours have triggered objections from some neighbors who fear increased noise and antisocial behavior. One resident expressed concern about the potential disruption to the quiet neighborhood, stating that the extended hours would cause 'so much distress.' Another objector pointed to 'excessive' noise during the pub's previous operation, highlighting the improved peace and quiet enjoyed by the area since its closure. Bolton Council's licensing committee is scheduled to review the application on Friday, January 24th, and ultimately decide the fate of the Bowling Green's bid for a late-night license
