Iran has backed, funded and trained several proxy groups across the Middle East region to differing degrees, including Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and a number of other factions based in Syria and Iraq. During the Arab Spring - the series of revolutions that rocked the Middle East in 2011 - Qatar picked sides.
Over the years, Qatar has sent millions of dollars into Gaza to pay for civil servant salaries. It also allowed Hamas's top political leadership, including Khalid Meshaal and Haniyeh, to live in Doha.
