Census: Latinos accounted for 71% of the U.S. population growth in just one year.

New Census Bureau figures won’t quell the unfounded fears of white supremacists and Christian nationalists about the perceived threats of growing minority groups. Think of the chants that rang out during the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville , Va. White young men carrying Confederate and Nazi flags chanted, “You will not replace us.” Think of the members of a hate group that marched in Nashville earlier this month, faces covered, carrying shields and Confederate flags.

Catch up with Elaine’s podcast 'Nosotros' on YouTube Think of the insurrectionists — the domestic terrorists — who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and those who still consider them patriots. The math of population shifts can trigger people. They see a threat in a decennial count — even if it’s constitutionally mandated to include every person residing within U.S. borders, regardless of who they are and what their status is.

Latino groups taking history in their own hands That should encourage policies that better serve them, as Latinos now account for more than 65 million of the overall U.S. population, which is now 335 million. Latinos are one-fifth, or 19.47%, of the total. Whites, or what the Census Bureau categorizes as non-Hispanic whites, remain the nation’s largest demographic group. But the report shows it was also the only one to show a population loss from 2022 and 2023.
