'Maybe that is why we can understand the Liverpool accent'
Playing at The Cavern on Mathew Street is the pinnacle for most Beatles tribute bands, but for one of South America’s leading acts the response wasn’t one they were initially expecting.
Speaking to the ECHO in the early morning from Lima, the country’s capital, Dick Robert Grández, drummer Carmen Calle, 41, frontman Kris Príncipe, 45 and multi instrumentalist Rene Alejandro Mardones, 39, all explain how their lives were shaped by Scouse accents despite only visiting the city once in their 30s.
The writing of Lennon and McCartney had this very effect on drummer Carmen Calle when listening to the Beatles in her youth. “I had to write by hand all the lyrics that I was listening to,” she explains, “that is how I learnt English.” “It was a beautiful moment when my father and I listened to Beatles music,” says Alejandro. “It was my vision for the future to maybe one day play this music on a stage. So it is a dream come true.”
Perhaps frontman Kris Príncipe, 45, sums up the universal language of the Fab Four’s music and its continuing global appeal. Kris cannot speak English, but appears to have one of the deepest connections with the music out of the entire band.
