Andy Emmott, a grieving father from Leeds, selflessly donated a kidney to 11-year-old Amber, whose story resonated with him due to the loss of his own daughter, Sarah, who also required a kidney transplant.

A grieving Leeds father has selflessly donated a kidney to an 11-year-old girl whose plight reminded him of his own daughter who died. Andy Emmott decided to donate the organ without hesitation when he learned that 11-year-old Amber desperately needed one to save her life. Her situation brought back painful memories for the father, as he lost his daughter Sarah at the young age of eight after campaigning for a kidney for her.

Sarah had been battling congenital nephrotic syndrome and other health problems since birth. She spent much of her life at Leeds General Infirmary and Martin House Hospice. Following a long and arduous fight, which was supported by Leeds United and Kalvin Phillips at the time, Sarah did manage to receive a transplant. However, she tragically died 364 days later. Andy, who is currently recovering, said: 'I donated a kidney because a kind stranger donated one to my daughter. I saw the appeal for Amber and there were so many similarities between Amber and Sarah that I felt I just had to put myself forward, and luckily, I was a very good match.' From Tadcaster, Andy is now recovering well and has returned to his job at Northern Powergrid, sticking to office duties until he is fully back on his feet.Amanda White, his manager, expressed her immense gratitude and pride for Andy. She said: 'I am scared stiff to donate blood, so to donate a kidney is amazing. I didn’t know Andy when he lost Sarah, but having visited him at home while he has been recovering, her presence is everywhere, photo after photo. 'What is obvious is how loved she is and how happy she was despite everything she was going through. Every photo, Sarah is wearing the most infectious smile. So, for Andy to change the life of another little girl after such a painful loss is incredible. 'As a team, we are really proud of Andy, and we wish both him and Amber a full and speedy recovery.' Since Sarah's diagnosis, Andy has worked tirelessly to raise funds for Theodora Children's Charity. He said: 'Theodora Children’s Charity supported Sarah during her numerous stays on the children’s ward at Leeds General Infirmary. They brought so much joy and laughter to her and were a great distraction for her. 'They are a small charity and don’t get much support for the work that they do, having to compete with bigger, well-known charities, so any donations are much appreciated.
