Lance Mace, a criminal from Leeds, was sentenced to prison after robbing a convenience store in Armley to raise money for his girlfriend's drug debt. The court heard that Mace had a history of convictions and was under the influence of drugs at the time of the robbery.

A Leeds offender who robbed a convenience store in Armley to raise funds to pay off his girlfriend's drug debt s has been sentenced to prison. Lance Mace received an extended sentence following the robbery in Armley last November. Leeds Crown Court heard on Tuesday, January 21st, that Mace had earlier in the day attempted to sell stolen goods to the shop assistant he later robbed.

Prosecutor Philip Adams informed the court that Mace was also being sentenced for shop theft, possession of a knife, and criminal damage stemming from his involvement in breaking a window at a man's basement flat. It was stated that he was paid by another individual involved in a dispute with the victim, who filmed the incident and posted it on social media. Mr. Adams detailed the robbery: 'The shop theft took place at a pharmacy in Armley. He entered with another man and he went to a display of cold and flu remedies and pain relief and entered the contents into a bag for life and then did the same at the cosmetics shelf. Another man was doing the same. They were challenged by staff but they left. He was recognised by a staff member at the time as he had done the same thing before.' The court learned that Mace attempted to sell stolen items to a shop worker at the convenience store in Armley, but the worker refused. Mace left but returned later that day armed with a knife. Mr. Adams stated: 'He produced a small kitchen knife and demanded bank notes from the till. The man backed away and the defendant came around and held the knife towards him while repeating his demands. The complainant said he couldn't open the till or refused to and the defendant took bottles of alcohol of the value of £37 before leaving the shop. In a victim personal statement dated the 24th November, he said he as shocked at the time. He says he is ok living and working in the area but he would feel anxious if he was to see him again. The defendant was recognised by officers on security footage at the shop.' The court was informed that Mace, appearing in court via video link from HMP Leeds, was apprehended from his home after being located hiding in undergrowth by a police dog. He confessed to officers that he stole to fund his drug addiction. Mr. Adams noted that the 36-year-old had prior convictions for wounding, battery, burglary, threatening behaviour, assault by penetration, and attempted rape. Defense attorney Mollie Briggs stated: 'He expects to receive an immediate custodial sentence today...He has been battling an addiction to drugs for 15 years. At the time, he had just been released from prison and his partner said she was in a drug debt and had been threatened with violence and her dog would be taken unless that debt was cleared in 48 hours. He had been injured himself by these people. You will note his arm has a brace on it from when he was hit by a hammer in August. He made the choice to do what he did to try and gather the money. He does wish for me to tell the court he is sorry for these offences and the Probation Service has concluded he recognises the distress he has caused to the victim of the robbery. He was entirely consumed to repaying the drug debt and was under the influence of drugs at the time. He recognises he has to make a change.' The court was informed that Mace is classified as an enhanced prisoner and has applied for a 'Thinking Skills' programme and hopes to be transferred to a drug-free wing to maintain his abstinence. His Honour Simon Batiste imposed an extended sentence on Mace, consisting of four years in custody and an extended licence period of two years
