Daniel Farke deployed Ethan Ampadu at center-back in the absence of Pascal Struijk, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. Ampadu, alongside Joe Rodon, delivered a solid performance in Leeds United's 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. While Farke expressed confidence in Ampadu's ability, he acknowledged the differences in playing styles and physical attributes compared to his midfield role and highlighted the need for alternative solutions if Struijk's absence proves lengthy.
Daniel Farke expressed his confidence in Ethan Ampadu 's ability to deliver a strong performance at center-back alongside fellow Welshman Joe Rodon . This deployment was necessary due to Pascal Struijk 's absence. Struijk is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, with an initial estimated recovery period of three weeks.
However, a scan scheduled later this week will determine the full extent of his injury, raising concerns that he might be sidelined for up to three months if a tendon is affected. Ampadu, familiar with playing at center-back, showcased a successful partnership with Rodon during Sunday's 3-0 victory against Sheffield Wednesday. When questioned about the possibility of Ampadu becoming a long-term solution at center-back if Struijk's absence extends significantly, Farke acknowledged the proven effectiveness of the Welsh duo. 'Joe and Ethan, even last season, our Welsh wall I think was a record in terms of clean sheets and the stability in our defence was really good,' Farke stated. However, he also pointed out the differences in playing styles and physical attributes. 'We're just lacking a little bit the physicality and also the streetwise football and sharpness of Ethan in the midfield because we don't have 100 per cent a similar player like him in this area. With Pascal Struijk, we are still a bit bigger and taller and stronger in terms of set-pieces in defending and also attacking.' Farke emphasized that the balance shifts when Ampadu plays center-back instead of midfield. 'The balance changes a little bit. If Pascal is not available we need to find some good solutions and today we got the feeling it was the best solution and I trust Ethan to play there. 'I wouldn't say it's our solution right now for the run-in but we know he can produce pretty good performances with Joe Rodon, he’s also used to play with him in this role but they are also other options. Hopefully Pascal if not out too much longer we shall see.
