Leeds United manager Daniel Farke suggests limited January transfers due to squad size concerns. The article examines the potential need for a new goalkeeper, with Illan Meslier's recent errors sparking debate. Patrick Bamford's future and other transfer opportunities are also discussed.
There is unlikely to be an overwhelming influx of new faces at Elland Road this January given Daniel Farke’s recent transfer admission. 'I don't like when the group is too big,” the Leeds United boss said last week. 'Once everyone is fit and you have four players for one position, it could also be negative for the spirit and the togetherness.
'If you are forced to do something due to injuries or something is really missing in the group, then you have to react but when you're sitting at the top of the table - there can't be too much wrong.' However, there are a number of questions that need answering. Concerns have been raised over whether Illan Meslier has the risk management skills to help Leeds secure automatic promotion following two costly errors in last weekend’s 3-3 draw at Hull City. Meanwhile, Patrick Bamford’s future remains unclear, having failed to start a single Championship match this season. There are potentially a host of acquisition opportunities too, if Leeds can get their ducks in a row. Goalkeeper decision It’s easy to forget Meslier has kept 14 clean sheets in 26 Championship games, with only Burnley’s James Trafford keeping more (16 in 25 matches). But the issue is what happens in the games where he does concede. For all of the close-shave saves he has made this season, there are just as many moments of spillage - his Jordan Pickford-eqsue blunder against Hull and that bizarre air catch against Sunderland back in October being just two examples. Both cost Leeds points and while they are top of the tree, the gap could be so much more than a single point. Still, it seems premature to rid of Meslier altogether - after all he does have Premier League experience. There are reports that the club are willing to offload the Frenchman, but to do that mid-season without a certified replacement seems negligent. Perhaps a new goalkeeper who can push him for his starting spot would tighten up the errors with a view of reviewing options in the summe
