Leeds United manager Daniel Farke acknowledges the lack of a natural backup for star player Brenden Aaronson in the number 10 position. This reliance on Aaronson, while acknowledging his exceptional performance, presents a risk due to the possibility of injury or suspension.
There has been one glaring hole in Leeds United ’s squad since the summer transfer deadline, and Daniel Farke has himself admitted to being mindful of it. While he may not call it a 'hole,' the manager has confessed that he lacks a natural backup for Brenden Aaronson in the number 10 position . Farke has been open to a new addition in this role, though he has consistently emphasized his satisfaction with Aaronson's performance.
The American has started the last 28 league matches in a demanding area of the pitch. His constant running and pressing style significantly increases his energy output, creating a genuine risk of fatigue. United faced the stark reality of Aaronson's absence when he limped off late in the game against Sheffield Wednesday. Although he was able to play days later against Norwich, it highlighted the risk Farke is taking if United fail to reinforce the number 10 position before the deadline. The manager contends that he is content with the fill-in options at his disposal. Manor Solomon played in the role against Harrogate Town in the FA Cup, while Wilfried Gnonto and Joel Piroe, as a false nine, have been mentioned as potential options by Farke. None of these players are ideal replacements. Leeds' attacking strength would undoubtedly diminish should Aaronson be unavailable for any reason, whether due to injury or suspension. It's akin to putting all their eggs in one basket. Aaronson performed effectively against Cardiff City, scoring the opening goal in the 7-0 rout. He was well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunity created by Daniel James’s run that left the goalkeeper stranded. The strike ended his goal drought of five matches without a contribution, although it still means he has scored only once in six games. Speaking to reporters after the match, Aaronson pledged to increase his goal and assist output. Naturally, to achieve this, he must remain on the pitch. So far, he has managed to do so, adding: “I feel like I have a good fitness level. Then it’s about holding myself when I get home, like icing.” Aaronson acknowledged that he was a regular starter during his time at former club RB Salzburg and at Union Berlin, where he spent last season on loan—although in both instances, he did not start 28 consecutive league matches. The 24-year-old began 19 straight Premier League games in the 2022/23 season, having been in the starting XI for all 27 Philadelphia Union matches in the 2019/20 season. So Aaronson is accustomed to playing frequently, although his current demands are pushing him to new limits. Leeds have little choice right now. The lack of alternatives guarantees him game time, though a player’s fitness can never be guaranteed. Fortunately, Aaronson’s good injury record allows Farke to maintain confidence in his playmaker’s ability to see out the season. However, this is always a risky strategy. It appears United will not be pursuing a number 10 before the transfer window closes, so this might be the status quo for the remainder of the season. Only in May will fans know whether this is a masterstroke or a negligent decision.
