Leeds United are on course to become one of a handful of Championship clubs to end the January transfer window with a positive net spend. Despite not making any new signings, the club is poised to finalize the permanent sale of Sonny Perkins to Leyton Orient, bringing in much-needed revenue.
Leeds United are on track to become one of a select few Championship clubs to end the January transfer window with a positive net spend . As of now, the Whites haven't made any new signings this month, joining Bristol City, Coventry City, and Sheffield Wednesday in that regard. However, Leeds have allowed two senior players to depart on loan. Joe Gelhardt has joined Hull City for the remainder of the season after failing to feature under Daniel Farke since early October.
Meanwhile, midfielder Charlie Crew, who made his senior debut in November, has linked up with Doncaster Rovers. It's important to note that none of these departures have generated a transfer fee as Leeds haven't sold any players this month. But that situation is about to change. Leeds are poised to finalize the permanent sale of Sonny Perkins to Leyton Orient, where he is currently enjoying a successful loan spell. Orient manager Richie Wellens openly expressed his desire to secure Perkins on a full-time basis earlier this month. A deal is anticipated to be completed before Monday's transfer deadline, with Leeds set to receive an undisclosed fee, along with a substantial sell-on percentage if Perkins is subsequently sold in the future. The 20-year-old has impressed for Orient this season, recording four goals and six assists in 29 matches. While he has only made four senior appearances for Leeds since his arrival from West Ham in 2022, he did manage to find the net against Cardiff City in the FA Cup in January 2023. Perkins's contract with Leeds is due to expire this summer, making this the last window the club can command a fee for him. By securing this transfer, Leeds will move into positive net spend for the January window, assuming they don't make any further signings. According to Transfermarkt, only two other clubs have recorded positive net finances this month. Plymouth Argyle have seen six players depart and have generated just under £6 million in profit, despite recruiting six new players. Meanwhile, Millwall have raised almost £13 million through two sales this window, while also welcoming two new faces. The initial fee anticipated for Perkins is believed to be minimal, so Leeds are likely to rank third among these three clubs. Nonetheless, they will join an exclusive group of teams achieving a positive net spend this January.
