The Irishman says it keeps Celtic rolling ahead of a huge European game.
And the defender knows they are going to need to get the shovels out again to show that spirit in spades when Lazio come calling. Scales had a smile as wide as the Clyde at the weekend after a bonkers finale at Fir Park. Celts were not at their slick best but bagged three crucial Premiership points in a wild final spell at Fir Park where they went ahead with three minutes left of normal time but feared they’d been pegged back by Motherwell in stoppage time.
“It’s momentum isn’t it? It shows we are going in the right direction. A lot of these Champions League games are all about digging in for each other and showing character.” Scales insisted he kept the faith – even after Blair Spittal grabbed a late equaliser – because he knows Celtic have a habit of going right to the final whistle.
“We had hoped we could get another goal. There has been a lot of added time in these games recently and Greg Taylor went down so we knew we were going to get a few extra minutes. The former Shamrock Rovers man had Gustaf Lagerbielke for company for an hour then Nat Phillips got a run out after returning from injury. The on-loan Liverpool man will be needed against Lazio with Lagerbielke suspended – but Scales is a banker. He might even be classed as the senior partner.
“It’s good for me to get minutes and get a run of games because it has been hard for me at Celtic I am not going to lie. The first year here I didn’t really get a run of games so it is good experience.”
