“And I was so riddled with anxiety over it, I was just sick. I was so scared of getting a word wrong. I couldn’t focus on the game. I was just completely freaked out every single day, every single Monday night.” Michele Tafoya, who replaced Guerrero as the sideline reporter in 2004 and stuck around for 13 seasons, delivered a stronger response., Tafoya acknowledged the pain of a miscarriage but blasted Guerrero’s literary depiction of Gaudelli, as well as the rest of the MNF crew, including Al Michaels and John Madden, the lead broadcasters at the time.
“When I take somebody on, I’m not doing it for myself. I’m the one on camera. But when I’ve heard, you know, a rape survivor’s story and it’s her swim coach that abused her from the time she was 8 to 13, then I feel like I’m being brave on behalf of her, right?” she said. “So, it makes me less nervous and afraid.”
Not every tale is so heavy. Guerrero owes her “Inside Edition” career in part to her strategic approach to posing for Playboy. For years, the magazine would send her a formal offer to appear on the cover. And for years, she’d throw it away. But at age 41, and with her career at a crossroads, she saw it as an opportunity, as she describes in the book, for “my big f— you to the critics, the media and everyone who had ever said anything disparaging about me.
“He just looked so annoyed. And I was like, ‘This is going to be a complete disaster,’’’ she said. “And then I just started joking around with him about a booger check. You know, ‘Let me see. Put your head back.’ And so we had this funny thing and he lightened up immediately. You know, he seemed to physically relax.”
