Protests from the far-right following Southport stabbings are expected in parts of the country
Greater Manchester Police has issued a dispersal order for the whole of Manchester city centre until 7pm today. It means officers have extra powers to deal with anyone taking part in or causing anti-social behaviour. It comes after an estimated 500 people have gathered in the city centre for the two protests today. It is estimated there are around 150 people in the ‘Enough is Enough’ demo and around 350 in the ‘Stop The Far Right’ counter protest.
Chief Inspector Natasha Evans said: "These powers have been authorised to make sure we can continue to provide and facilitate the right to any peaceful protests that have been organised. "Our officers will be able to instruct and advise anyone who is causing, or very likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to leave an area immediately. People have a legal right to participate in peaceful protest, however where people are intent on breaking the law, we will take action.
