An island 7,800 miles from Washington may seem like an odd place to hold a massively important hearing that decides the freedom of someone who has been a target of American prosecutors for the past decade. Assange and his legal team wanted to have the hearing at a federal courthouse on Saipan, the capital of the Northern Mariana Islands, because Assange does not want to set foot in the continental United States, according to a letter from the Justice Department.
