A suspicious package prompted the evacuation of a city centre building in Liverpool. Union Street was closed and a cordon is in place as emergency services deal with the situation.
A city centre building was evacuated after a 'suspicious package' was received. A cordon is currently in place on Union Street, just off Old Hall Street in Liverpool city centre , which is next to The Capital Building. A report was received at around 12.50pm today, Thursday, January 2, after a suspicious package was received at the building on Union Street.
Merseyside Police said as a precaution, Union Street has been closed and a building, understood to be The Capital Building - the largest office building in Liverpool - has been evacuated while emergency services deal with the incident. Police have warned drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing. A cordon is also in place on Rumford Place. Pictures of the scene showed a large police presence and hundreds of office workers have been told to stand on the other side of the road and away from the building. The Tesco Express which is next door to the office building has also been evacuated. Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 or @CrimestoppersUK
