Wataru Endo is closing on a surprise transfer to Liverpool - but he cannot be the last arrival this summer for Jurgen Klopp
Less than a week ago, the Reds had a £110million offer accepted by Brighton for 21-year-old Moises Caicedo while also retaining a long-standing interest in £50m-plus 19-year-old Romeo Lavia of Southampton, two of the Premier League's most highly-rated young defensive midfielders.
And it represents Fenway Sports Group sanctioning a transfer that veers away from the tried-and-trusted methods used in much of Klopp's reign. Indeed, Endo will become the oldest signing for whom a transfer fee has been paid since Ragnar Klavan, also 30 and brought in from Germany, was bought seven years ago.
Indeed, it is imperative Liverpool are again active in the market again this month, whether that is, as is more likely, another defensive midfielder, or a left-sided centre-back with the Reds having kept an open mind while attempting to manage resources hampered by the lack of Champions League football this season.
The midfielder also possesses leadership qualities. He was initially on loan at Stuttgart in 2019/20 when - along with fellow loanee Nat Phillips - he helped them back into the Bundesliga. Endo's move was then made permanent, and by the end of the next season he had assumed the skipper's armband and was named club captain in the summer of 2021, and is the current Japan national team skipper.
