Liverpool's apparent willingness to part company with some of their young players has divided opinion - but sometimes a clean break is better for all parties
Supporters who tuned in to Liverpool's final pre-season outing against Las Palmas on Sunday afternoon could be forgiven for thinking they'd stepped back in time. If the sight of the Reds toiling away inside an empty Anfield wasn't enough to evoke memories of the covid-induced fever dream that was the 2020/21 season then the image of a battle-hardened Nat Phillips marshalling the back line surely did the trick.
While that number includes relative veterans like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones, it is largely made up of recent graduates who enjoyed breakthrough seasons last term. With that in mind, it is understandable why some fans might view the club's readiness to cash in on some of their fledgling superstars as somewhat of a betrayal of their principles and of their former manager.
