Liverpool ECHO taste testers put supermarket spring rolls to the ultimate test. From Morrisons' bland offering to M&S's premium delight, discover which spring roll wins the coveted crown.
Liverpool is gearing up for its annual Chinese New Year celebrations, culminating in a grand parade and street party in the city center on Sunday, February 2nd. This festive period sees many people across Merseyside indulging in delicious Chinese cuisine. As part of the festivities, we decided to delve into the world of spring rolls, a staple dish at any Chinese banquet.
Spring rolls, with their crispy wrappers filled with a medley of ingredients like duck, chicken, and vegetables, are a familiar delight to anyone who enjoys Chinese food. Their signature crunch and savory filling make them a popular choice. For those who prefer convenience, supermarkets offer pre-made spring rolls that simply require heating in the oven or microwave. Given the increased demand for Chinese meals around Lunar New Year, we embarked on a taste test comparing the spring rolls offered by various supermarkets. Our quest led us to Tesco, M&S, Asda, and Morrisons, while Aldi and Lidl proved to be empty-handed, lacking spring rolls in their refrigerated sections. To ensure a fair comparison, we opted for the supermarket's own-brand spring rolls, avoiding the more expensive 'finest' options. We also aimed for consistency by selecting larger spring rolls from each store, as the size and shape can influence the cooking and texture. To maximize crispiness, all the spring rolls were cooked in an air fryer and then presented for a blind taste test at the Liverpool ECHO's city center office. Our taste testers provided their honest opinions on each spring roll, considering factors like flavor, texture, and overall experience. The Morrisons spring rolls, while generously filled with vegetables, fell short in the flavor department. They were criticized for being bland and lacking spice. The Asda spring rolls, on the other hand, received praise for their flavor and spice but were let down by their thick pastry, which overshadowed the filling. The M&S spring rolls, priced at a premium, impressed with their perfect balance of filling and wrapper, delivering a crunchy and flavorful experience. Finally, the Tesco spring rolls faced the most criticism, with their flavor and texture likened to the cardboard tube inside a toilet roll
