This year marks 25 years since the first Slavery Remembrance Day commemorations in Liverpool
Liverpool will 'pause and remember' on August 23 as the city commemorates Slavery Remembrance Day. The date has become a 'significant date' in the city's cultural calendar, since the commemorative event was first held 25 years ago. Since 1999 Liverpool has held events to celebrate 'and honour the memory of those enslaved Africans who suffered and died', with a Walk of Remembrance and Dorothy Kuya Memorial Lecture with a keynote speaker.
We reclaim those voices, weaving them into the tapestry of remembrance and resilience. Let us confront the shadows of history with courage, and illuminate a path forward guided by justice, empathy, and solidarity.' The Walk of Remembrance will be from 12pm on Friday August 23 beginning at Williamson Square and with music and entertainment along the way will end with a Libation ceremony near the Canning Quayside and Dry Docks.
