The veteran Light Blues stopper said he was 'mad' shortly after full time at how bad his side had played.

Livid Leon Balogun pulled no punches as he delivered a brutally honest damning verdict of Rangers’ display in their pre-season friendly defeat to English third tier side Birmingham City.

The veteran Nigeria international defender made no excuses despite it being a bounce game with Philippe Clement’s side winless in four friendlies and just one more to go - against Union Berlin - before the action starts for real with a Scottish Premiership opening day trip to Hearts followed by the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv or Partizan Belgrade just days later.

Balogun, who signed a one year extension in the summer, admitted the display - after which Clement revealed Todd Cantwell wants to quite Ibrox - was unacceptable with Rangers trailing by two goals at the break before Scott Wright pulled one back after the restart. The 36-year-old former Wigan Athletic man, speaking to Rangers TV, said of the error-strewn display: "Not good enough, quite frankly.

“We can say Birmingham are a good side, they got relegated, I don't really care because when you play for Rangers you can't present yourself like that. That's just plain and simple. It's just after the final whistle, so I'm quite mad right now but I'm pretty sure there will be good things from the second half, even though right now it's hard to imagine.

"But obviously we are still learning, we still have a lot of young players and a few new players in the team. There will be mistakes made, we made a lot today, and we just need to make sure, because there's ten days until the kick-off of the new season, that we eradicate them, and even throughout the season there will be mistakes but we have minimise them. We must make sure we don't make the kind of mistakes that we done today.
