Liz Truss wants the G7 to become an ‘economic Nato’ – and may carry more credibility on foreign policy than she does on tax 🔎 Analysis by HugoGye
Liz Truss has promised to keep pushing her free-market ideas for the economy from the back benches – but it is hercarries little economic credibility in the eyes of the public, given the failure of her tax-cutting mini-Budget and the brief duration of her tenure in No 10.
So her first speech since leaving office, at a meeting of international parliamentarians in Tokyo today, will attract attention from around the world., in effect working on the presumption that Beijing is already heading the same way as Moscow. She drew a direct line between the two powers and called on the West to protect Taiwan now, lest it go the same way as Ukraine.
Ms Truss said: “We know that doing more now will help prevent tragedy later… We have to ask ourselves: if we had admitted Ukraine to Nato, would Putin have dared to invade? Or indeed if we had put stronger sanctions in place after 2014 or supplied weapons to Ukraine earlier? Could we have saved many lives and protected our security?”
No major Western country has formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, instead observing the “one China” policy which states that Beijing and Taipei have mutually incompatible territorial claims. Ms Truss suggested that this should be reassessed, saying: “Many countries have limited diplomatic and ministerial ties to Taiwan due to agreements negotiated with China.
“The world has changed since then and some of these arrangements are being rethought. We should find ways to elevate Taiwan’s status that reflects its global value.”
