Moto GP: Francesco Bagnaia has held off Martin to claim his eighth win of the Moto GP season in Japan.

With the Australian Grand Prix just days away, this year’s MotoGP world champion ship is guaranteed to be a fight only Ducati can win.The Borgo Panigale brand has unleashed a 16-round run the likes of which we’ve rarely seen – 15 Grands Prix victories, 13 sprint wins , 75 per cent of all pole positions and 80 per cent of all podium places , including locking out the rostrum in 11 of the past 12 Grands Prix .

It was a conundrum with no wrong answers, and Ducati had to swallow hard to sign Marquez – lest he leave for somewhere else and come back to beat a factory who spurned him – and run the risk of an enraged Martin flying the coop.

Sign Marquez, watch Martin walk and hold your breath; Ducati was damned if it didn’t, and potentially double-damned when it did. Bagnaia won the 2022 title and backed up in 2023 as Martin threw away chance after chance to make him sweat, Bagnaia fittingly sealing the deal in Valencia last November when Martin, once again, crashed. This year, it’s been like the riders have switched personalities – and places in the standings.

The contracts of both Bagnaia and Martin, plus their respective teammates Bastianini and Franco Morbidelli, stipulate that all four riders on GP24 machinery have to get the same improvements to the bike at the same time, while there simply isn’t time to get the add-ons to all four machines with the final four rounds of the season taking place in the next five weeks, three of them on the other side of the world to Ducati’s Italian base.
