It's now been 25 years since it closed its doors for good
A loved and lost Liverpool café that started from humble beginnings in the city centre served its 'famous fry-ups' to customers for half a century. For decades, Frank's Cafe on the Dock Road was an institution in Liverpool. The café was opened in 1950 by husband-and-wife Frank and Ada Smith and in 1993 was taken over by their son, Frank junior, who had worked there since he was a teenager.
In 1975, the family business received a top culinary award, an entry in the Egon Ronay Guide. The Egon Ronay Guide to Transport Cafes read: 'Frank’s Café is on the southbound carriageway of the A57 a quarter of a mile from the Irish freight passenger terminal. Frank’s black belt judo certificate hangs above the gas fire and soccer pictures on the walls indicate that he is also an Everton fan.
