The former SNP first minister, who died aged 69, crafted an ambitious vision for Scotland's future
Admired and criticised in equal measure, Alex Salmond undeniably brought Scottish independence to the brink during his time as leader of the SNP., crafted an ambitious vision for Scotland’s future, bringing renewed energy to the independence campaign and sharpening the party’s strategy.
His final political comeback came in 2021 when he launched the Alba party ahead of the Holyrood election. The new party attracted some SNP defections but never achieved more than 3 per cent at the ballot box. Salmond became politically active while studying economics and medieval history at the University of St Andrews, joining the SNP in 1973 and becoming president of the Federation of Nationalist Students.
After constitutional changes re-established a Scottish Parliament in 1999, Salmond oversaw the transformation of the SNP from a tiny number of lawmakers in London’s parliament to the dominant political force in Scotland. The triumph paved the way for the 2014 independence referendum, where Salmond campaigned on the promise that Scotland could thrive as a nation free from the perceived constraints of the United Kingdom.
