Dr Ravi Jayaram told the trial hospital bosses told consultants not to go to police

A maternity unit consultant said to have allegedly caught Lucy Letby 'red-handed' dislodging a breathing tube has told of his 'enormous regret' at not calling police at the time.

As the trial resumed at Manchester Crown Court today , Ben Myers KC, defending, asked Dr Jayaram whether he was telling the truth when he said in the ITV interview that the 'only possibility' was that the breathing tube had been deliberately dislodged. Dr Jayaram said if he had called police, police would have called the chief executive at the trust who would have suggested 'they are just a bunch of complaining consultants'. He said: "That's the reason I didn't pick up the phone," he said.

The barrister told the witness he had not gone to management to say he had caught Lucy Letby 'red-handed' The defence argue Dr Jayaram did not regard the incident as suspicious at the time and 'added detail' to make it appear more suspicious. He said he went into nursery one about two-and-a-half to three minutes after nurse Williams had left.

The witness said no alarm was sounding on the ventilator although he said he did not look to see if the alarms had been suspended. "Had the alarm gone off that would have been my prompt to walk in. The alarms are loud and where I was sitting, if the alarm had gone off I would have heard it," Dr Jayaram told jurors.
