The much-anticipated M25 Junction 10 upgrade project in Surrey has been delayed by nine months due to extreme weather events experienced in 2024. National Highways is working to add extra lanes around the junction, but the adverse weather conditions have impacted the progress. Despite the setback, the organization remains committed to completing the project on schedule, albeit with a revised timeline.

A project to enhance the M25 motorway around Junction 10 in Surrey has encountered a setback due to severe weather conditions in 2024, resulting in a nine-month delay. National Highways , the organization responsible for the project, initiated work in 2022 to add additional lanes at the junction, where the motorway intersects with the A3. To facilitate the progress, the motorway will undergo full or partial closures over two consecutive weekends in March.

National Highways announced that the M25 will be closed in both directions during the weekends of March 7 to 10 and March 21 to 24. This closure is intended to enable the demolition and removal of existing bridges. Following the March closures, the A3 will be closed to northbound traffic between Junction 10 and the A245 at the Cobham roundabout from April 11 to 14. Notably, the March 2024 closure marked the first planned daytime shutdown of the M25 since its inauguration in 1986.This extensive project, costing £317 million, aims to improve Junction 10, the busiest section of the M25, which accommodates over 300,000 vehicles daily. The project encompasses the construction of structures for pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders, as well as the implementation of the UK's first heathland bridge, designed to provide a safe passage for wildlife. Jonathan Wade, senior project manager, acknowledged the impact of the weather delays but emphasized that the team has been diligently working to recover lost time and maintain the on-road works schedule. He stated, 'We understand that roadworks cause disruption, but the long-term benefits of this project, which will improve journey times and enhance safety for millions of people, outweigh the short-term inconvenience.' Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, offered a cautious outlook, stating that 'motorists who've grown used to the queues and closures' associated with the scheme 'must now brace themselves for another summer, autumn and winter of discontent as the completion date slips into 2026.' However, Gooding also acknowledged the positive aspect of being assured of no further closures after March 2024
