Facing a severe staff shortage, Majorca restaurants are adopting self-service payment systems, prompting a shift in the dining experience for holidaymakers.

British holidaymakers planning trips to Majorca , Spain , are facing a wave of 'extreme' changes at dining establishments due to a severe staffing crisis within the hospitality sector. Bars and restaurants across the island are increasingly implementing self-service payment systems, prompting a word of caution for European tourists.

Juanmi Ferrer, president of the CAEB Restaurants Association, highlighted the critical worker shortage, forcing many businesses to adopt alternative strategies for survival in the post-pandemic era. He emphasized, 'It is the only solution to be able to stay open.' Some restaurants are introducing QR code payments directly at tables, while others allow customers to order and pay using QR codes at specific tills. However, these adjustments haven't been universally embraced. The Express reports that some diners are expressing displeasure. A reader of the Majorca Daily Bulletin voiced their discontent, saying, 'I think these machines are horrible!' They shared a negative experience, 'I was so disappointed when the bar at the airport was 'renovated' into a horrible unwelcoming space, losing all of its original Majorcan charm. But when I had to pay using one of these monstrosities, that was my final time going there!'Juanmi Ferrer also presented what he termed the 'Italian model,' where, particularly in casual dining, 85% of restaurants manage orders and payments upfront at the cashier before customers are seated. 'The owner of the establishment is usually at the cash register,' he explained. At the renowned Palma cafe Can Joan de s'Aigo in Majorca, manager Anselmo Cardona stated that their pay-at-the-till system, initially implemented during the pandemic, has remained in place due to its benefits for staff, as reported by the local island newspaper. Acknowledging the undeniable trend of automation, Mr. Ferrer remains optimistic about the future of service staff, stating, 'In the hospitality industry, human warmth will always be necessary.
