Heagney was initially treated as a high risk missing person before a murder investigation was launched
Stephen Eugene McCourt, 39, of McGartland Terrace in Dromore, Co Tyrone, is accused of murdering Heagney between 30 December 2021 and 6 January 2022.
The court heard from a police constable that concern was first raised for Heagney’s safety in July 2021 after he had not collected prescriptions in person from a local health centre, with a friend noted as having picked up the prescriptions in the months previous. Police say the last activity on Heagney’s phone was a video sent to the accused via Facebook Messenger on the morning of 1 January.

Bringing forward the case for McCourt’s bail application, barrister Blaine Nugent described the police case as ‘wholly circumstantial’.
