A woman in her 40s died after being found seriously injured on the street in Plymouth, England. Police arrested a 53-year-old man, Paul Antony Butler, in connection with the death. Authorities believe the victim and suspect were known to each other.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in Plymouth on Wednesday night. Paul Antony Butler, 53, was apprehended in the Liskeard area of Cornwall, approximately 20 miles from Plymouth . Devon and Cornwall Police reported that the woman, in her 40s, was discovered seriously injured in the West Hoe area at 8.55pm. She was transported to the hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries. Authorities believe the victim and suspect were acquainted.
Murder detectives have made the arrest of Butler, who was described as 'armed and dangerous,' on suspicion of murder in connection with the woman's death. The victim, who remains unidentified, passed away in the hospital early Thursday morning. 'He is currently in police custody having been arrested on suspicion of murder,' stated a police spokesperson. 'Officers would like to thank the local community for their assistance and their patience while our inquiries continue into this incident.' A mandatory referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to prior interactions with the victim. 'This is normal procedure in these circumstances.' Earlier, police had issued a public warning against approaching Butler, cautioning that he could be 'armed and dangerous.' Devon and Cornwall Police has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to 'previous contact with the victim.' Police received a call at 8.55pm on Wednesday after the woman was found injured in West Hoe Road. A shop worker reported hearing 'screams' and individuals requesting an ambulance during the incident. David Badham, owner of the Central Convenience shop on the street, told the PA news agency: 'I had a member of staff working and she said she heard screams. 'She obviously then popped her head out of the door to see what was going on, to hear people saying 'Call an ambulance'.' Social media footage appeared to show numerous police cars and ambulances parked in West Hoe Road on Wednesday evening near a post office and the West Hoe pub. Several streets in the West Hoe area were cordoned off, and there was a significant police presence throughout the day. An IOPC spokesperson said: 'We understand that Devon and Cornwall Police are planning to make a referral in relation to this. 'When we receive it we will carry out an assessment to decide what further action is required by us.
