Manchester City faced Newcastle in the Premier League with Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez looking bright in attacking midfield.

Pep Guardiola says Kevin De Bruyne is irreplaceable, that nobody can replace the Manchester City talisman who could be out until February. So far, he's not seen anything to be proven wrong.

A look at the teamsheet supported the general feeling that Guardiola doesn't yet trust Foden on his own in the De Bruyne role, with Alvarez recalled to the starting line-up. But despite Guardiola's brushing off of questions about Foden as a number 10, he played centrally against Newcastle just like against Sevilla. The difference was that Alvarez was also in the space behind Haaland, with Kyle Walker providing the width on the right.Asking Walker to cover the entire right flank is a lot - although the defence morphed seamlessly into a back-three - but it's fair to say City looked much more balanced with two players behind Haaland.

When Foden got slipped in on the right channel, he didn't need to look up to know Alvarez wasn't far away, before the Argentine arrowed a ball into the top corner. Both were also taking it in turns to feed Haaland, as Newcastle's backline struggled to keep track of the City attackers.
