Man United have made the decision to send striker Joe Hugill to Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2024/25 season.
Had you missed the news on Wednesday afternoon, you would have been forgiven for questioning Joe Hugill 's omission from Manchester United's squad for their pre-season tour of the United States.
With Joshua Zirkzee still away after representing the Netherlands at the European Championship, Hugill would have been a useful inclusion. Rasmus Hojlund and Ethan Wheatley are the only centre-forwards who have travelled to the US. His short-term stint in the Midlands was a test of his strength and character; Burton were in the midst of a relegation battle and avoided the drop by just two points. Wigan will be hoping to compete at the other end of the table this season.
Of course, there is nothing to say a season at Wigan is going to turn Hugill into the next Harry Kane, who spent time on loan at Leyton Orient in 2011, but a good haul of goals will raise his profile. If he reaches double figures, for example, it is guaranteed people will start talking. They have started to improve on that front this summer, cashing-in on the likes of Willy Kambwala and Donny van de Beek, who were simply never going to be first-team regulars. Hugill, as harsh as it may sound, is in the same boat.
