Manchester United are considering a move for Benfica left-back Alvaro Fernandez as they seek to bolster their defensive options this January transfer window.
Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Benfica standout Alvaro Fernandez during the January transfer window, according to recent reports. The club is actively seeking a new left-back this month, and with the deadline approaching, Fernandez has emerged as a serious contender. While United are engaged in negotiations with Lecce for Patrick Dorgu, if an agreement cannot be reached, they will shift their full attention to Fernandez.
This information comes from the Daily Mail, which states that Benfica manager Ruben Amorim's team is currently evaluating whether to activate the £15 million buy-back clause for Fernandez. This clause remains valid until January 2026, and United are believed to have sent scouts to observe Fernandez in action for Benfica against Casa Pia on Saturday. Fernandez originally departed United for Benfica permanently in May 2024 following a successful loan spell in Lisbon. The 21-year-old was a part of the United squad from 2020 to 2024, having transferred to Old Trafford from the Real Madrid academy. Despite his time with the club, Fernandez never made an appearance for United's first team. Instead, he was loaned out to Preston North End, Granada, and ultimately Benfica. Fernandez could be returning to United this month, however, if the club encounters difficulties finalizing a deal for Dorgu, who currently plays for Italian club Lecce. Although United had an initial offer of £16.8 million plus £4.2 million in add-ons rejected last week for Dorgu, it is anticipated that they may submit a revised bid. Fernandez, who has been one of Benfica's most impressive players this season, also possesses a €50 million release clause in his current contract. United may be eager to bring him back to Old Trafford before any other club contemplates triggering that clause, particularly if his exceptional performances continue. The Red Devils are believed to have gained greater financial flexibility following the loaning of Antony to Spanish club Real Betis
