According to Lord Sebastian Coe, Sir Alex Ferguson was close to taking the job as Team GB football manager at the London 2012 Olympics - only for it to fall through
Sir Alex Ferguson was incredibly close to taking control of Team GB's football squad at the London 2012 Olympics , according to Sebastian Coe.
Coe explained: "It was ostensibly an English team, there were a smattering of Welsh players but effectively, it was an English side. I thought I can't imagine any club that's going to release professional players to an Olympic team having a problem with their Under-23 players getting a six-week tutelage or masterclass from Alex Ferguson on the training ground."
It was at this event that Coe received a positive response from Sir Alex regarding the exciting opportunity, after much contemplation. He added: "Alex looked at me and said: 'The answer's yes.' I said fine. We never said anymore other than that we'd speak again." It is reported that Manchester United, the FA and the BOA all pushed back at Coe's suggestion, leaving Ferguson to see his management days out with Manchester United. Renowned as a prolific striker during his playing days, Sir Alex famously represented teams such as Queen's Park, Dunfermline, and Rangers from 1957 to 1974, finding the back of the net 171 times in 317 outings.
