Man United are on a long-term project under Ineos, meaning some brave decisions will have to be made.
After hitting back at Alan Shearer with a staunch defence of Marcus Rashford in Friday's press conference, it was inevitable that Erik ten Hag would keep him in his starting line up against Liverpool.
Ten Hag described Shearer's analysis as "stupid", insisting he has been "very happy" with Rashford's form. Rashford scored just eight times for United last season - 22 fewer than he netted during his 2022/23 campaign, in which he scored 30 goals in a single campaign for the first time in his career. After scoring against Brighton, it was somewhat harsh that he was the member of United's forward line that lost his place for the visit of Liverpool to accommodate Garnacho's return to the starting XI. Many felt it should have been Rashford who made way.
The club is in the process of making changes to the squad and it is a process that will take time. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, ahead of the summer, admitted United would need more than one transfer window to put things right.
