John McGinley, aged 20, grievously wounded one man in the ear and neck while he was waiting for a cab, as well as brutally attacking an elderly man during his morning stroll.
A Co Donegal man has expressed deep regret and sought forgiveness for inflicting two vicious assaults on total strangers, involving separate incidents.
Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle recalled the newer charges against McGinley, who has six past convictions on record. In one incident, which occurred on October 31st, 2022, McGinley assailed a man unknown to him as he anticipated a taxi on Letterkenny’s Main Street, reports the Irish Mirror. A knife was discovered on McGinley during a search. However, during his interview, McGinley, from Glenwood Park in Letterkenny, denied any involvement in the assault but did identify himself in the CCTV footage shown by Gardai.
Once on the ground, the young man kicked him in the head forcing Mr Doheny to cover his face, but not before another kick landed on his hand as he shielded his face. Mr Doheny's partner began screaming loudly and the attacker fled. The victim expressed his terror and helplessness during the attack, stating that it has severely impacted his mental health, leading to anxiety. He urged Judge Aylmer to consider the consequences on him when determining the sentence for McGinley.
