The scanners - which will allow passengers to carry over 100ml liquid - are now not expected to be in place until next year
Holidaymakers will continue to face strict hand luggage limits after Manchester Airport missed the deadline to install new security scanners.
The Next Generation Security Checkpoint Scanners were set to be rolled out across major airports ahead of this summer with the government setting a nominal deadline of June 1.However, many - including Manchester Airport - have had to be granted extensions and will not be able to introduce the new scanners until 2025. It means passengers flying from Manchester this summer will still need to stick to the 100ml liquid limit while containers must still be put in clear plastic bags.
Aberdeen, Teesside, London City and Bristol airports have already installed the machines, which use 3D scanning technology and have slashed queue times by 50 per cent as they remove the need for manual bag checking. Thanks to the new scanners, passengers will be able to carry bottles containing up to two litres of liquid in their hand luggage.
