The A555 Manchester Airport relief road has been hit by severe flooding for the third time in five years, trapping vehicles and forcing road closures.
The A555 Manchester Airport relief road remains underwater this morning (Thursday, January 2) with vehicles trapped and submerged under flood waters. The A555 relief road was shut yesterday, having been badly affected by the floods. Images from the scene showed cars completely submerged on the airport relief road between Hazel Grove and the airport, near Cheadle. It’s believed five cars have been stranded, with just the roofs visible above the water.
Police were also called out to rescue people from a car in the early hours of New Year's Day. This morning, the road remains flooded with new images showing a van stuck in the high waters with the driver still inside. The A555 road in Greater Manchester runs along its southern border with Cheshire. It is officially known as the Manchester Airport Eastern Link and runs between Manchester Airport and the A6 south of Hazel Grove in Stockport. Originally intended as a relief road to ease congestions, the earliest section of the A555 was built in 1995 as an abandoned scheme to connect Stockport, Hazel Grove and Poynton to Manchester Airport. However, the busy road has been besieged with flooding problems following heavy downpours since the £290m route was completed in 2018. An independent investigation into the disastrous floods that hit Stockport in the summer of 2019 previously revealed that 'design shortcomings' meant the road would 'remain vulnerable to flooding from prolonged or frequent heavy rainfall'. The A555 flooded a number of times in 2019, and was closed again in January 2021 and January 2023 following heavy rain
